New HOD for Medicine, Dr Ntobeko Ntusi
Dr Ntobeko Ntusi has been appointed as the new Head of the Department (HOD) of Medicine, from November 2016. Dr Ntusi replaces Professor Bongani Mayosi, who is Dean designate for the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Dr Ntusi is a lecturer in the Department of Medicine and a Fellow completing his clinical training in Cardiology. He obtained a BSc (hons) degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Haverford College in the USA, and an MBChB degree in Medicine and Surgery UCT, before completing a four-year Fellowship of the College of Physicians through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa. He obtained a D.Phil degree in Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford, and completed his MD in Cardiology at UCT. Dr. Ntusi served his internship and later worked as a community service medical officer and senior house officer at Frere Hospital in East London, and has also worked at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford as a honourary Cardiology Specialist Registrar.
Over the last 10 years Dr. Ntusi has published more than 55 peer-reviewed articles in international scientific journals. He has over 80 published conference proceedings and has written 5 book chapters. Dr Ntusi has significant clinical experience and has been involved in clinical innovation at Groote Schuur Hospital, including the development of platforms for electronic referrals within the Department of Medicine.
He has garnered considerable recognition both as a student and as a researcher. As a registrar, he received UCT’s Oates Award and the Medical Research Council of South Africa’s Specialist Award (2011). In addition, he was named one of 200 Most Influential Young South Africans by the Mail and Guardian (2011) and has received numerous fellowships including the NRF Emerging Researcher Award (2015).
